Quick answer. The easy way is free. Add your Gmail account in Apple Mail, then drag your Mac Mail messages into the Gmail mailbox, and they upload to Gmail. Gmail’s own Import mail feature can pull them in instead, and for a big move you export to MBOX and push it up with Thunderbird or a tool. Setting a forward keeps new mail flowing to Gmail too.

How do you import Mac Mail to Gmail?
Apple Mail, the Mac Mail app, speaks IMAP, and so does Gmail. That single fact makes the move easy, and free. People switch for Gmail’s search, its bigger storage and the mail on any device. There’s no need for a tool for a normal mailbox, whatever some guides say.
Three routes do it. You can add Gmail to Apple Mail and drag the mail across, let Gmail’s own Import feature pull it in, or export to MBOX and push that up for a big move. A forward keeps new mail heading to Gmail on top.
Start with the drag method below, it’s the simplest. The others help for a large mailbox or ongoing mail.
Apple Mail speaks IMAP, so three ways carry the mail up to Gmail.
“The line that this needs paid software is just wrong. Apple Mail talks IMAP, so I add the Gmail account right in Mail, then drag the folders across, and they land in Gmail as labels. That’s the entire job for most people. Gmail’s own Import feature can pull the mail in from the other side if you’d rather, and for a really big mailbox I export it to MBOX and push it up through Thunderbird. The one thing to know is that Gmail’s website won’t take a raw MBOX, so that route always goes through a client or a tool.” Shubham Dixit, Email Migration reviewer (draft, pending approval)
How do you add Gmail to Apple Mail and drag the mail over?
You add Gmail to Apple Mail, then drag your Mac Mail into it. Apple Mail signs in to Gmail with Google, and once the account is there, anything you drop into it uploads to Gmail. This is the free, simplest way.
Here are the five steps.
- In Apple Mail, open Mail, then Add Account, and choose Google.
- Sign in to your Gmail account and allow access, then turn on Mail.
- Your Gmail account now shows in the Apple Mail sidebar.
- Select the Mac Mail messages or an entire mailbox you want to move.
- Drag them into a folder under the Gmail account, and Apple Mail uploads them.
I add the Gmail account in Apple Mail and just drag the folders across, and they land in Gmail as labels. Make a new folder under the Gmail account first if you want the mail kept apart, since a dragged folder becomes a label in Gmail.
A couple of pointers. The mail to move is in your On My Mac mailboxes, the local ones, since IMAP mail already sits on a server. And a big drag is slow, because Gmail throttles the upload, so move it in batches or leave it running overnight, and keep an eye on your 15 GB of Gmail storage.
Add the Gmail account, then drag the mail into it, so it uploads to Gmail.
How do you use Gmail’s Import feature?
You can let Gmail pull the mail in from its own side, with the Import feature. It suits an iCloud or webmail account, and runs from the Gmail settings.
In Gmail, open Settings, then See all settings, then Accounts and Import, and choose Import mail and contacts. Enter the source address and an app password, then Gmail fetches the mail. It’s handy when you can’t sit at the Mac, though it pulls over POP, so it’s slower than the drag route.
How do you move a big mailbox with MBOX?
You move a big mailbox by exporting it to MBOX first, then pushing that up to Gmail. Apple Mail exports a mailbox as a .mbox, and Thunderbird or a tool sends it to Gmail. Note that Gmail’s website won’t take a raw MBOX, so it always goes through a client.
Here are the four steps.
- In Apple Mail, right-click a mailbox, then Export Mailbox, then save the .mbox.
- In Thunderbird, add your Gmail account, then the ImportExportTools NG add-on.
- Right-click Local Folders, choose ImportExportTools NG, then Import mbox file.
- Drag the imported mail into the Gmail folders, and Thunderbird uploads it.
How do you forward Apple Mail to Gmail?
You forward Apple Mail to Gmail to keep new mail flowing after the move. This is for the mail that arrives later, not the mail already in the mailbox.
For an iCloud address, open iCloud.com, go to Mail, then Settings, then turn on Forward my email to, with your Gmail address. For another account in Apple Mail, add a rule under Mail, Settings, Rules, that redirects new mail to Gmail. Either way, fresh mail lands in Gmail from then on.
When does a converter help?
A converter helps when there are many mailboxes, or you’d rather not set up Thunderbird. It reads the Apple Mail MBOX and uploads it to Gmail over IMAP, in one flow.
PCDOTS MBOX to Gmail Converter loads exported Apple Mail files and migrates them to Gmail on Windows, keeping the folder structure and attachments. It signs in with an app password and filters by date or sender. The free trial migrates a sample first. Follow these four steps.
- Install and run the tool, then Open and select your MBOX files.
- Preview the loaded mail in the panel.
- Open Export and select Gmail.
- Enter your Gmail address and app password, then start.
The tool route, an Apple Mail MBOX migrated to Gmail at once.
Here are the first steps with the screens.
Step 1. Install and run PCDOTS MBOX to Gmail Converter.

Step 2. Open and select your MBOX files.

Step 3. Open Export and select Gmail.

Match the method to your move, one mailbox, a batch or the mail still coming in.
Which method should you use?
Use add-and-drag for a normal mailbox, Gmail Import when you’re away from the Mac, and a tool for many mailboxes.
| Method | Best for | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Add Gmail, drag the mail | A normal mailbox | Free, on the Mac, uploads over IMAP |
| Gmail Import feature | Away from the Mac | Free, needs an app password, slower |
| MBOX Converter | Many mailboxes | Windows, MBOX to Gmail in bulk |

- A forward from iCloud or an Apple Mail rule keeps new mail heading to Gmail.
Frequently asked questions
Can I import Mac Mail to Gmail for free?
