Quick answer. Gmail cannot open a PST file or let you upload one directly. To import PST files to Gmail, you have three routes. If you have Outlook, drag the mail into Gmail through an IMAP account for free. Move contacts with a CSV. Or use a converter that reads the PST and uploads it to Gmail with no Outlook needed.

Can you import a PST file into Gmail directly?

No, and this is the part that trips most people up. Gmail has no built in PST import, and there is no upload button anywhere in Gmail that accepts a PST file. A PST is the data file Outlook uses, and Gmail simply does not read that format. So when people search for how to upload a PST to Gmail, the honest answer is that you cannot hand the file to Gmail as is. You move the mail inside it across in one of three ways instead, and two of them are free. The rest of this guide walks through each.

Gmail will not take a PST file directly. You bridge it with Outlook and IMAP, or with a converter.

Which method fits your situation?

The right choice depends on what you have and what you are moving. If Outlook is installed on your machine, you can drag the mail into Gmail at no cost. If you only need your address book in Gmail, a free CSV does it. And if Outlook is not available, or you have a large or orphaned PST to move in one go, a converter reads the file directly and uploads it for you. Pick the route that matches your case.

How to drag your PST mail into Gmail for free?

If Outlook is installed and your PST is open in it, you can move the mail into Gmail with no extra software. The trick is to add your Gmail account to Outlook over IMAP, then drag the messages across so Outlook syncs them up to Gmail.

Step 1. In Gmail settings, turn on IMAP under the Forwarding and POP IMAP tab.

Step 2. In Outlook, add your Gmail account as a new IMAP account, so it appears in the folder list alongside your PST.

Step 3. Open the PST in Outlook, then select the emails or a whole folder and drag them onto a folder under the Gmail account. Outlook uploads them and they appear in Gmail as labels.

“The drag method is genuinely free, but Gmail throttles IMAP. On a large mailbox it slows down and can stall partway, and you can hit the daily upload cap. For a few thousand messages it is fine. For tens of thousands, a converter that batches the upload finishes the job without babysitting it.” Shubham Dixit, Email Migration reviewer (draft, pending approval)

So the free route is the right call for a modest mailbox when you already have Outlook. For a heavy account, or a machine without Outlook, skip ahead to the converter.

How to move your contacts from PST to Gmail?

Emails and contacts move differently, so if you also want your address book in Gmail, handle it on its own and it stays free. In Outlook, open the Import and Export wizard, export your Contacts folder to a CSV file, and save it. Then open Google Contacts in your browser, choose Import, and upload that CSV. Your Outlook contacts land in Gmail with their names, emails and phone numbers intact. If your contacts are only inside a PST with no working Outlook, the converter below can pull them out along with the mail. There is a fuller walk through in our guide to exporting the Outlook address book.

How to import PST to Gmail with a converter?

When Outlook is not installed, the PST is orphaned, or the mailbox is too big to drag comfortably, a converter is the clean route. It reads the PST file directly, with no Outlook profile required, signs in to your Gmail, and uploads the mail with the folder structure kept as labels. The PCDOTS Email Converter does this in bulk, including attachments, and can handle several PST files in one run. There is a free trial so you can confirm it works on your file before buying.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import a PST file into Gmail directly?
No. Gmail has no built in PST import and no upload button for PST files. You move the mail across through Outlook over IMAP, or with a converter that uploads it to Gmail for you.

How do I import PST files to Gmail for free?
If you have Outlook, add your Gmail account as an IMAP account, then drag the PST emails onto a Gmail folder so they sync up. For contacts, export them to a CSV and import that into Google Contacts.

How do I import PST to Gmail without Outlook?
Use a converter. It reads the PST file directly, with no Outlook profile, signs in to Gmail and uploads the mail with folders kept as labels.

Can I import my contacts from a PST to Gmail?
Yes. Export the Outlook Contacts folder to a CSV, then import that CSV into Google Contacts. A converter can also pull contacts from a PST that has no working Outlook.

Will my folders and attachments be kept?
Yes. Both routes keep attachments, and the folder structure carries over to Gmail as labels.

Can I import several PST files at once?
A converter supports bulk import of multiple PST files in one run. The manual drag method handles one folder at a time.

Your Outlook mail, now in Gmail

Gmail will not swallow a PST file whole, but moving the mail inside it is straightforward once you pick the right route. With Outlook on hand, dragging the messages in over IMAP costs nothing, and a CSV brings your contacts along. When Outlook is out of the picture or the mailbox is large, a converter reads the PST and uploads everything to Gmail with the folders intact. Choose the route that fits your setup, and your old Outlook mail lives in Gmail where you can reach it from anywhere.
