Why export Yahoo mail to PST?
A PST is Outlook’s own mailbox file, and it holds everything in one place, your emails, folders, attachments and dates, in a format you keep on your computer. Exporting Yahoo mail to PST gives you an offline copy that opens in Outlook on any machine, survives losing access to the Yahoo account, and fits neatly into a backup. The one thing to know up front is that Yahoo has no button that spits out a PST, so you get there either by connecting Yahoo to Outlook or by using a converter. Both need the same first step.
First, create a Yahoo app password
Yahoo will not let another app sign in with your normal password. Any IMAP connection, whether it is Outlook or a converter, needs a one time app password that you generate inside your Yahoo account. This is the step most guides get wrong, and older instructions that mention an OTP are out of date, so set this up first and both methods below will connect cleanly.
Generate your app password. Sign in to Yahoo, open Account Info, then Account Security, and choose Generate app password or Manage app passwords. Name it something like Outlook, and Yahoo shows you a short password. Use that in place of your normal password when Outlook or the converter asks to connect.
The app password is what lets Outlook or a converter reach Yahoo over IMAP and build the PST.
Which method fits you?
Both methods end in a PST, and the difference is whether you use Outlook. If you already have Outlook, you can add your Yahoo account to it and export a PST for free. If you do not have Outlook, or you have a large mailbox and want it done in one pass, a converter pulls Yahoo straight into PST on its own. Here is how they compare.

Export Yahoo to PST through Outlook, free
If Outlook is installed, this route costs nothing. You add Yahoo to Outlook over IMAP, let it sync, then use Outlook’s own export to write a PST.
Step 1. In Yahoo settings, make sure IMAP access is on, and have your app password ready.
Step 2. Open Outlook, add a new account, enter your Yahoo address and the app password, and let the folders sync.
Step 3. Go to File, then Open and Export, then Import/Export, and choose Export to a file.
Step 4. Pick Outlook Data File (.pst), select your Yahoo folders, choose a location, and finish.
It is free and reliable, but it does depend on having Outlook, and a very large mailbox can take a while to sync before you can export. If that does not suit you, the converter below skips Outlook entirely.
