PCDOTS · Image Conversion Guide
You want each frame of an animated GIF saved as its own PNG. That is a PNG sequence. The work sounds small. The hidden parts are the order of frames, the transparent edges, and the timing between frames. This guide shows the route that holds all three together on Windows and Mac.
To convert a GIF to a PNG sequence, open the animated GIF in an image converter, split the file into its frames, then export each frame as PNG. For bulk batches of GIF files, use the PCDOTS Image Converter to keep frame order, transparency and color depth steady in one run.
What This Guide Covers
Why a PNG Sequence Beats a Single PNG
A GIF, short for Graphics Interchange Format, was built by CompuServe in 1987. It packs many frames into one file. PNG (Portable Network Graphics, released in 1996 to replace GIF) holds one frame per file. When you save an animated GIF as a single PNG, you lose every frame except the first.
A PNG sequence keeps each frame as its own file. Numbered frames like frame_001.png, frame_002.png and so on let you rebuild the animation in After Effects, Premiere, DaVinci Resolve or any timeline tool. The order survives. The transparent background survives. The color depth jumps from 256 indexed colors in GIF to 24-bit or 32-bit with alpha in PNG.
I tested a 90 frame GIF on a Windows 11 laptop. The PCDOTS demo edition exports the first ten frames so you can verify quality before buying. After saving the full set, every PNG kept the transparent edges and the frame order matched the original GIF playback.
Convert GIF to PNG Sequence Step by Step
The route below uses PCDOTS Image Converter on Windows. The Mac route is the same in spirit, only the install differs.
Install and Open the Converter
Download the setup, run it, then launch PCDOTS Image Converter. The Home screen shows two big buttons for Add Files and Add Folder.
Load Your GIF Files
Click Add Files and pick one or many animated GIFs. Use Add Folder if your GIFs sit in a single directory. The app reads each file and lists the frame count beside it.
Preview the Frames
Click any GIF in the list to open the preview pane. Step through frames one by one. Confirm transparency, color and frame timing before export. This step saves rework later.
Pick PNG as the Export Format
Open the export dropdown and choose PNG. The app switches to sequence mode automatically when the source is an animated GIF. Each frame will save as a separate PNG file.
Set the Destination Folder
Browse to an empty folder so the numbered frames stay clean. The app creates a subfolder per GIF when you run a batch so frames from different sources never mix.
Review the Save Options
Pick the naming pattern. Leading zeros like 001, 002, 003 are the safe choice for editors. Keep transparency on. Keep the original size unless you need a fixed width.
Run the Export
Press Convert. The demo edition writes the first ten frames per file. The full edition writes every frame at the original color depth.
Open the Output Folder
Click Open Folder when the run ends. The numbered PNG files are ready to drop into After Effects, Premiere Pro or any sequence aware editor.

Sequence-aware export is the part most free tools skip. They flatten the animation to one frame or they break the frame order. A clean numbered sequence is the only output that imports straight into a video timeline.
Photoshop and GIMP Route
If you already pay for Adobe Photoshop, you can open an animated GIF, then choose File > Export > Render Video and set the format to PNG sequence. The Image Sequence preset writes numbered PNGs. The work is fine for one or two GIFs.
GIMP needs the GAP plugin (GIMP Animation Package) to export frames as a PNG sequence. The plugin install is hit or miss on modern GIMP builds, and the export dialog feels old. For a single test it works, for production it slows you down.
When Photoshop or GIMP Fits
- One off frame edit, like fixing a single sprite
- Manual color grading on a small clip
- You already own the Adobe Creative Cloud seat
Bulk and Batch Handling for Many GIFs
Hand-converting one GIF in Photoshop costs about three minutes. Twenty GIFs costs an hour. PCDOTS Image Converter holds a queue, names every output folder after the source file and runs the batch in one click. The frame order, the transparent edges and the size stay the same across every file.
Use the Add Folder button for whole directories. The app skips files that are not GIF so you can point it at a messy assets folder without sorting first.
Why Free Online GIF to PNG Sites Often Break Frames
Free online converters and browser sites look fast on the surface. The trade is real. Uploads of large animated GIFs time out. The server flattens the animation to the first frame. Frame timing is dropped. Some sites add a watermark. Worst of all, a private GIF you upload now sits on a server you do not control.
For one tiny three frame GIF the risk is small. For client work, raw footage or private brand assets, a paid third party desktop converter like PCDOTS is the safer choice. The file never leaves the machine.
FAQ on GIF to PNG Sequence
Can I convert a single frame GIF to one PNG?
Yes. Single frame GIFs save as one PNG file. The app detects the frame count and switches modes for you.
Will the transparency carry over?
Yes. PNG supports an 8-bit alpha channel. PCDOTS Image Converter keeps the transparent pixels from the source GIF.
What is the file name pattern of the output?
The default is the source GIF name plus a three digit counter. You can switch to four digits for very long animations.
Does the converter work on Mac?
Yes. The Mac edition runs on macOS 11 and later. The steps match the Windows guide.
Can I rebuild the GIF from the PNG sequence?
Yes. Import the numbered PNGs into After Effects, Photoshop or any sequence aware editor and export back to GIF if needed.
Why not just save the GIF as one big PNG?
PNG holds one frame per file. Saving an animated GIF as a single PNG drops every frame after the first and the motion is lost.
Is there a free version?
The demo edition exports the first ten frames per GIF so you can confirm the quality before you buy the full license.
