Primary Features
Built for serious DBX work
Six core capabilities that make this the most thorough free DBX reader on the market, suitable for everyday users and forensic investigators alike.
View DBX files in bulk
Upload multiple DBX files at once and read every email without losing any information. The viewer shows four preview modes: content, message header, hex and raw message.
No Outlook Express required
The viewer is fully standalone. You do not need Outlook Express, third-party libraries, or any other software installed. Open DBX files even on systems where Outlook Express was never installed.
Maintains DBX folder hierarchy
While loading, the viewer preserves the original folder structure. Your Inbox, Sent, Spam, Trash and Archived folders show exactly as they did in Outlook Express, with no swapping or interchange of data.
Advanced search options
Find specific emails using multi-criteria search: sender, recipient, subject, date range and free-text content. Search across loaded DBX databases including Calendar, Tasks, Notes, Journals and other items.
Recover from corrupted DBX
The viewer reads orphaned and partially corrupted DBX files when most other tools fail. Useful for recovering archived email data from old or damaged Outlook Express installations.
Wide Windows compatibility
Works on every modern and legacy Windows version: Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista and XP, both 32-bit and 64-bit. Same installer for all supported systems.

What is a DBX file?
A DBX file (Database file) is the proprietary mailbox format used by Microsoft Outlook Express to store email messages, folders and metadata. Each Outlook Express folder has its own .dbx file: Inbox.dbx, Sent Items.dbx, Drafts.dbx, Outbox.dbx, Deleted Items.dbx and any user-created folder you added in OE.
A special file named Folders.dbx stores the master folder hierarchy. When loaded, it tells the viewer how every other DBX file connects together. If Folders.dbx is missing or corrupt, the original folder tree cannot be fully reconstructed, but individual DBX files can still be read independently.
For technical readers and forensic investigators, here are the file format identifiers:

File signature (hex)

Microsoft Outlook Express 4.x – 6.0
Status
Discontinued (April 2014)
Microsoft retired Outlook Express in April 2014, leaving many users with archived DBX files but no native application to open them. Modern Windows versions (10 and 11) do not support Outlook Express, which is why a standalone DBX viewer is the practical way to access this data.
Where are DBX files stored?
DBX files are saved in the user profile folder, in a hidden Application Data subfolder. The exact path depends on the Windows version:
Windows XP and earlier:
C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\<Identity GUID>\Microsoft\Outlook Express\
The <Identity GUID> is a long random string assigned by Outlook Express to each user identity. If you have multiple identities, each has its own subfolder.
Cannot find your DBX files? Open Command Prompt and run this command to scan an entire drive and write the locations to a text file:
DIR /S *.dbx > DIRDBX.TXT
This produces a file named DIRDBX.TXT in your current directory listing every DBX file on the drive. Useful when recovering data from an old hard drive or system migration.
Hidden by default. The Application Data folder is hidden in Windows Explorer. Enable "Show hidden files" in Folder Options, or paste the path directly into the address bar.
Outlook Express versions supported
The PCDOTS DBX Viewer reads DBX files created by every released version of Outlook Express:
OE 4.0 / 4.01
Windows 95/98 (1997)
OE 5.0 / 5.01
Windows 98 SE (1999)
OE 5.5
Windows 2000 (2000)
OE 6.0
Windows XP (2001)
OE 6.0 SP1+
Windows XP SP1+ (2002)
Including orphaned DBX files (files separated from the original Outlook Express installation), newsgroup .dbx files and DBX archives created in any of the above versions and copied to a different system.
Manual alternatives to DBX Viewer
If you prefer not to install third-party software, there are a few manual options. They have trade-offs that the PCDOTS DBX Viewer avoids, but they exist:
A non-Microsoft replacement for Outlook Express that imports DBX files directly. Free for personal use; commercial use requires a license. Reproduces the OE interface but is not actively integrated with modern email standards.
Modern email client that can import DBX files via its Tools > Import menu. Free for up to two accounts. Imports the data but does not preserve the OE interface or workflows.
Two-step migration: import DBX into Windows Live Mail, export to Outlook PST format, then open in Microsoft Outlook. Requires both clients installed and works only on Windows 7/8 (Live Mail is no longer supported).
Outlook Import Wizard (legacy)
Outlook 2010 and earlier had a built-in "Import Internet Mail and Addresses" option for Outlook Express. Removed from Outlook 2013 onwards. Only works if Outlook Express is installed on the same system.
The PCDOTS DBX Viewer reads DBX files directly without installing or uninstalling anything. No conversion, no second client, no version-specific dependencies.
Why won't my DBX file open?
If a DBX file refuses to open in any tool, one of these is usually the cause:
File is corrupt. Outlook Express databases can corrupt after sudden shutdowns, disk errors, or interrupted writes. The PCDOTS DBX Viewer includes recovery scanning that handles partial corruption; severe corruption may require dedicated recovery tools.
File exceeds the 2 GB legacy limit. Outlook Express had a 2 GB per-file limit. Files near or above this size were prone to silent corruption. The PCDOTS viewer can read past the 2 GB boundary if the data is intact.
Folders.dbx is missing. If you copied individual .dbx files but not Folders.dbx, the folder hierarchy is lost. Individual files still open, but folder relationships do not reconstruct.
File is encrypted or password-protected. Some Outlook Express identities use password protection. Provide the original identity password or remove protection in OE before copying the file.
File is read-only or has permission issues. Right-click the file, choose Properties and clear the Read-only attribute. Make sure your user account has read access to the folder.
File is not actually a DBX file. Check the file signature using a hex editor: a valid DBX file starts with bytes CF AD 12 FE. Files with other signatures may have been renamed but are not actually DBX databases.
