- Open Image, Mode, Grayscale to drop the colour, since Bitmap needs a grayscale image first.
- Open Image, Mode, Bitmap.
- Set the output resolution to match where the image goes.
- Select a method, 50% Threshold, Pattern Dither, Diffusion Dither, Halftone Screen or Custom Pattern.
- Click OK. To edit again, convert back to Grayscale, since Bitmap mode locks most tools.

How to save a PSD as a BMP file
Going the other way is just as quick. You export the PSD to a flat BMP from Photoshop.
